Since the National Woodie Club started “Drive Your Woodie Day”, the Santa Cruz chapter has selected that day to hold their annual Spring Cruise. This year Joe and Arlene Solis organized a day of scenic roads and breath taking views. The majority of our members live throughout the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas. Groups of woodies, from a number of directions, met at a wooded parking area on Skyline HWY 35. Skyline is a two lane road that runs north and south on top of the mountain range that divides the Pacific Ocean from the San Francisco Bay. After hello’s and a group picture, we headed north on Skyline, past the famed Alice’s Restaurant, then west to our first stop at San Gergorio State Beach. 20 plus woodies parked together allowed beach goers to a preview of Woodies on the Wharf. Cheese, crackers and a small sampling of fine wine, along with another group picture, gave everyone a chance to stretch and chat with interested spectators. Off again, we headed north on HWY 1 to Half Moon Bay,(not the full moon reported at San Gergorio), a small beach town just south of the famous surf spot, Mavericks. Our final destination was for lunch at La Nebbia Winery. Pot luck was the special of the day. The food was spectacular, and the deserts fantastic. Arlene even packed ice cream with all the fixings for some killer sundaes. After lunch, Bocce Ball and visiting with woodie friends filled the rest of the day. The weather Gods did their part and treated us to beautiful weather, which allowed the Santa Cruz Woodie Club to toast in the official opening of our Woodie Season. Thanks again to Joe and Arlene for making this one of the best Spring Cruises ever, and to our President, scratch that, Club Queen Toni Wilkerson for leading this band of merry travelers.
