Well, I would like to start by a single quote from one my favorites, Yogi Berra. “It’s like deja vu all over again.” Yes, your Santa Cruz Woodie Club (SCWC) Executive Board (E-Board) met via Zoom on Wednesday the 17th of February. After a spirited discussion we came away with the same conclusion as last March 2020 when the E-Board made an initial decision to postpone Woodies On the Wharf (WOW) 2020. Even though we have learned a great deal over the past year with respect to the Coronavirus we are just starting the process of dispensing the vaccine to the vast majority of the California population. The E-Board wanted to follow in the past WOW tradition of various parties: Thursday at the Hilton’s, Friday Morning Paddle-Out at the Ferdinand’s, Welcome Party Friday evening at the Ocean Pacific all leading up to 10,000 to 12,000 people attending WOW on the Santa Cruz Wharf. We wanted to again sit in the parking lot at the Ocean Pacific for our Tailgate Party to enjoy Bob Lopez’s sing along, the raffling off of Cheryl Luchsinger’s Quilt Saturday night and then ending the weekend with our Sunday Cruise along West Cliff Drive concluding the WOW weekend at Java Junction where we all say “Aloha “oe, A hui hou kakou” (Farewell to you, until we meet again). Sadly, although the City of Santa Cruz remains tremendously supportive of WOW they cannot issue permits for any large events or gatherings until the County and City of Santa Cruz has reached the least restrictive level, which is not anticipated until well after the E-Board needed to make its decision to either hold or postpone WOW.
As I indicated above, there will be no sanctioned Santa Cruz Woodie Club WOW held on Saturday, June 26, 2021 on the Santa Cruz Wharf. But, if you find yourself with a full tank of gas and your woodie all clean and ready to cruise to Santa Cruz, I’m sure you will run into some of our Ohana on the Wharf. If you do decide to visit Santa Cruz and spend time on the wharf, please be sure to visit the merchants and say Aloha.
Stay tuned for additional information with respect to our SCWC traditional “Drive Your Woodie Day” Spring Cruise which falls on Saturday May 15, 2021. Arlene Solis will be laying the groundwork for what will be a long overdue cruise as the last two scheduled annual cruises were postpone due to rain and of course the Coronavirus. Whatever is planned will be in a manner that will ensure a safely distanced but enjoyable event; that will allow us to meet again after missing our Ohana over the last year. Other traditional SCWC events held after WOW are still on hold but we are hopeful that the availability of a vaccine and the loosening of restrictions will allow us to get together in some manner later in the year. One very special event that we are tentatively planning will be our Annual Installation Dinner, which would next be held on January 15, 2022, so mark that date now!
I want to take this moment and say to all, STAY SAFE AND WELL. If you take a peek, you will see light at the end of the covid tunnel. I personally am looking forward to our next WOW which will be held on June 25th weekend of 2022.
Aloha and Mahalo,
Joe Solis, President SCWC
